Knockdown Boogie

Soaring slabs of slide guitar, rock-solid backbeats, and heavy blues dexterity course through Jimbo Mathus & Knockdown South, the latest musical incarnation of the founding member of rootsy, swing-jazz revivalists the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Weaned on the beer-gospel, Appalachian folk ballads and country music heard at his father's knee during all-night jam sessions in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Jimbo departed from the Zippers in the late '90s. He eventually migrated back to his hometown and returned to his Southern blues-boogie roots with the Knockdown South ensemble. Along the way, he played as Buddy Guy's second guitarist on two tours and two albums, opened a recording studio, and produced Elvis Costello. The grandson of a Prohibition-era juke-joint owner, Jimbo describes his music as "heavy boogie and cotton field disco" and plans to rock the Bambo Room "as long into the night as they let us." Knock 'em down, drag 'em out, and let 'er rip.

Jimbo Mathus and Knockdown South play at 8 p.m. Thursday, August 18, at the Bamboo Room, 25 S. "J" St., Lake Worth. Tickets cost $15. Call 561-585-2583.
