Bring cash, show skin
FRI 8/26 This weekend, you might want to put on your South Beach best and roam Collins Avenue with your cell-phone camera. Of course, plans will shift and updates will be Blackberried across Miami, starting with Friday's BMI Awards at the Fountainebleau Resort and continuing through Sunday's MTV Music Video Awardsat the American Airlines Arena. But at press time, this is what we could tell you about the festivities surrounding the shows. Times are 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and admission is... whatever gets you past the velvet ropes.
Friday: Privé hosts a party for Pamela Anderson and photographer David LaChappelle; DJ AM spins. Diddy hosts a party at Mansion. Nelly is at Opium Garden. Saturday: Linkin Park, the Black-eyed Peas, and DJ AM at Mansion; Carson Daly and Bam Margera at Privé; Snoop Dogg at Opium. Sunday: Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, the Bravery, and the Killers at Mansion.; Usher at Privé.
MTV hosts "Hotel MTV" all weekend long; look for the giant Moon Man outside the Doubletree Surfcomber Hotel. We Are 38
Closer gets down in CityPlace
FRI 8/26 Most magazines wouldn't celebrate the release of their 38th issue, but Closer is definitely not like most magazines. According to Managing Editor David K, the mag is celebrating the beginning of rock 'n' roll at Resort Lounge (700 S. Rosemary Ave., West Palm Beach). Commencing with the Video Music Awards kickoff party, two of the area's finer musical acts serenade the guests -- Summer Blanket and Truckstop Coffee. But if music's not enough to get you out to CityPlace, try turning down this scenario: drinking free Red Bull and Peroni while rubbing elbows with Matchbox Twenty's Adam Gaynor and actor Steven Bauer (you know, the guy who played Manolo in Scarface). Right -- that's what we thought. The party starts at 9 p.m. Make sure to show up before the Ketel One-dispensing ice sculpture starts to melt and the liquor gets watered down. Call 561-491-7376. -- Jake Smith
Baby mama drama
FRI 8/26 The Catholic Church could make a killing by renting out protesters for marketing purposes. Several priests knocked the movie Love for Rentbecause it features surrogate motherhood -- a venture they claim is "against divine nature." Coincidentally (or not), this was the only film that sold out all 300 tickets during the Miami Latin Film Festival. In it, Colombian hottie Angie Cepeda (right) stars as a law student who has a baby for a childless couple -- in exchange for $50,000. The film opens Friday at Regal Sawgrass Mall Cinemas (2600 NW 136th Ave., Sunrise) and the Regal Westfork Plaza 13 (15977 W. Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines). Call 954-846-1707 or 954-430-2566, respectively. To view a trailer, visit www.loveforrent.com. -- Deirdra Funcheon
How Cool is This?
SAT 8/27 The R&R Peer Group -- adults with developmental disabilities -- decided to hold a fundraiser that would help needy people obtain eyeglasses and hearing aids. "Let's throw a massive concert!" they told their supervisor, Robby Greenberg. But Greenberg suggested they slow down and host an open mic first. Poets, musicians, and karaoke singers show off at the Pembroke Pines Recreation Center (7400 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines) at 8 p.m. Call 954-240-6313. -- Deirdra Funcheon
