Dan the Man

DJ Dan

The dance community may have a vaguely socialist aesthetic, but it still gets downright Nietzschean in the way it worships the übermensch: celebrity DJs. And for an up-close view of the will to power, just catch Los Angeleno DJ Dan. As part of Funky Tekno Tribe, Dan helped pioneer West Coast house music. He would inspire the breakbeat trend a few short years later with the 1995 Electroliners dance-floor anthem "Loose Caboose" before reimagining the aesthetic with '99's harder, funkier "Needle Damage." He has released nine albums (including the recent Lift) and has remixed projects for Keoki, Groove Armada, Filter, A Tribe Called Quest, Olive, and Orgy; the latter obtained platinum status with "Blue Monday." If you want an evening of euphoric dance music or if you simply want to do a little stargazing, Saturday's show at Nocturnal is a no-brainer.

DJ Dan performs at 10 p.m. Saturday, September 10, at Nocturnal, 50 NE 11th St., Miami. Admission costs $20. Call 305-576-6996, or visit www.nocturnalmiami.com.
