Pour Some Pewter on Me!

Demonstrations and exhibits for the artist in you

SAT 9/24 You're in the Armory now. You'll never get rich, you sucker! No, just kidding. You probably won't make much money as an artist, but you sure will find a few good ways to spend it if you hang out with the faculty members of the Armory Art Center of the Palm Beaches during their open house.

In an effort to show what those folks have up their sleeves for the fall course schedule, they will give you a tease of some of the great things that can be accomplished with some basic training under your smock. The Armory offers classes in ceramics, drawing and pastels, painting, collage, photography, jewelry, sculpture, stone carving, and more, so expect to see a smattering of all that. Plus, artists are going to pour some bronze and pewter right before your eyes, then march you inside the Colaciello Gallery to preview two annual exhibitions that will run through October 15: "Armory Faculty and Artists in Residence Show" and "Armory: The Master Artists Workshops Preview."

The open house will take place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Armory Art Center of the Palm Beaches (1700 Parker Ave., West Palm Beach), and the event is free. Call Michelle at 561-832-1776, ext. 21. -- Riki Altman

The Heat Is On

Israel's Oscar entry will put a fire under you

FRI 9/23 After winning numerous awards from the Israeli Academy and the Berlin International Film Festival, this year's Israeli Oscar entry, Campfire, promises to ignite emotions. Set in the West Bank around 1980, the film portrays a 42-year-old widow and her teenaged daughters trying to fit in with a new religious settlement but finding that the path to acceptance is paved with rocky politics. "Those who know best" suggest that the family will be welcomed only with the addition of a new husband/father and some testing of the girls' ideologies. This dramatic story is presented with a spike of humor and tenderness. Campfire plays at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale) from Friday through Thursday. Tickets cost $4 to $6. Call 954-525-3456. -- Riki Altman
