This Week's Day-by-Day Picks

WED 28A story doesn't reach classic status just because it was written by some dead dude (to borrow a phrase from Bill and Ted) but because the tale itself remains relevant for generations to come. And when one ignores the classics, the consequences can be frightening. To wit: If the members of Kiss had paid more attention to The Phantom of the Opera, they might have reconsidered their ill-fated decision to remove the makeup. In Andrew Lloyd Webber's tale, the hideously disfigured Phantom wears a mask while tutoring Christine, a chorus singer he fancies. But when he shows Christine where God beat him with an ugly stick, the girl freaks and calls on the handsomer Raoul to come to her rescue. The Phantom of the Opera runs tonight through October 29 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets cost $41.25 to $71.25. Call 954-462-0222. (JB)
