Railroad Earth

You can't really soften up the image of a train, but you can power a train on 4/4 and 6/8 rhythms and keep it rolling on tingly mandolins, chilly violins, and the rollicking ramblings of dobro, guitar, and banjo. A big powerhouse train with an enormous heart: that's Railroad Earth -- a folk-rock sextet with a keen and expert hand revamping American roots music. Steadily gigging since its formation in the spring of 2001, towing loyal hordes of hobos (better-smelling Deadheads), Railroad Earth is still riding high on last year's release, The Good Life, its third studio album. These Jersey boys will finish their Southeast touring schedule at Magnolia Fest in North Florida and are gearing up to release a live album this coming January. Ride the first-class car or hop the empty freights in the back -- it don't matter: This is a free show!

Railroad Earth plays at 9 p.m. Wednesday, October 19, at Tobacco Road, 626 S. Miami Ave, Miami. This show was moved from the Culture Room and is all ages. The show is free. Call 305-374-1198.
