A La Mode

Depeche Mode

So what do all these new bands that play '80s romantic revivalist music listen to besides the Chameleons and Interpol? Depeche Mode,of course, which you can verify for yourself at the kickoff show of the venerable band's new tour. These Brits have been making albums since 1981, certifying them as official, OG, post-punk new wavers. So what if their album sales have been sagging? They continue to make vibrant -- no, scratch that -- um, interesting, original music that speaks to darkly clad depressives everywhere. After 2001's disappointing Exciter, this year's Playing the Angel marks a welcome return to form; primary songwriter Martin Gore, who is going through a divorce, accesses the sad, brooding, industrial-based compositional style that DM created in the first place. This lineup consists of guys from the band's original core, which is promising. Get your fishnets on, boys, and make sure you remember how to dance the "bugs-crawling-all-over-me."

Depeche Mode plays with the Bravery at 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 2, at BankAtlantic Center, 1 Panther Parkway, Sunrise. Tickets cost $49.50 to $75. Call 954-835-8000.
