Rock It Ear

Galactic

The last time Galactic played Fort Lauderdale, at an overcapacity show at the Culture Room, fans immediately noticed a missing element: vocalist Theryl "Houseman" DeClouet was no longer with the band. The sextet has since nixed lyrics from its repertoire and returned to its roots, focusing solely on instrumental explorations. Exactly one year later, Galactic comes full circle, now an instrumental powerhouse steeped in futuristic, modern acid jazz and the tradition of Crescent City funk. This time around, expect an even tighter machine, backed by drummer extraordinaire Stanton Moore's insanely in-the-pocket beats, thumping bass from Robert Mercurio, and those famous N'awlins horns. High on the heels of its ten-year anniversary, Galactic still pays homage to the New Orleans masters. Listen for the Meters, the Neville Brothers, and Dr. John woven into the band's out-of-this-world originals.

Galactic and the Stooges Brass Band play at 8 p.m. Friday, January 13, at Revolution, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $25. Call 954-727-0950.
