Canada South

The Canadians are coming, and we’re not talking about Rush’s 30th Anniversary tour. We’re talking snowbirds… French Canadian snowbirds, to be exact, the ones who’ve become so numerous in South Florida that portions of Broward County have earned the nicknamed p' tit Quebec. Canadafest is South Florida’s premier French Canadian festival, held this Saturday and Sunday on the Hollywood Broadwalk, featuring more French Canadian food and music than a separatist movement rally in Quebec City. Among the artists performing are Etienne et ses Invités, Evan Joanness, Diane Gauthier, and Bernard Paquette. There also are some 100 or so kiosks representing various event sponsors. It’s the closest you can get to hanging at the beach in Montreal in January, even if they had one (riverfronts don’t count). And no, you don’t need to speak French to enjoy Canadafest. Music, food, and drink are universal. The music starts at 10:30 a.m. and continues through the evening.
