It’s Tango Time!

It's probably fair to assume that, for most people, the thought of a tango performance doesn't evoke images of Moscow or Hong Kong any more than seeing Threepenny Opera transports them to, say, Cleveland. The expectation of a certain ambiance is part of the reason you're there. That being said, Boccatango both delivers and defies expectations. The brainchild of international dance star Julio Bocca, Boccatango is an homage to the tango tradition of Buenos Aires. The performance deftly fuses elements of ballet and modern dance with the music of Piazolla, Canaro, Gardel, and others, creating a contemporary interpretation of Argentine tango while giving a nod to the traditional. And, because it takes two to tango, Bocca is joined by Cecilia Figaredo, as well as dancers from Ballet Argentino, a couple of vocalists, and the eight-piece orchestra Octango. There’s a bit of nudity here, so if that’s too much to handle (oh, heavens!), don’t say you weren’t warned.

Performances of Boccatango take place Thursday and Friday the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale, 954-462-0222) and at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts (701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach, 561-832-7469). Tickets cost $55 to $65 at the Broward Center and $15 to $55 at the Kravis Center.
