Legends Go to Bat

The great thing is that more than 50 former major league ballplayers and celebrities will be playing in the 18th Annual Joe DiMaggio Legends Gameand raise money to build a pediatric oncology wing at the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood. The curious thing is, how are they going to raise money when tickets cost a mere $5 for reserved seats, $3 for bleacher seats, and anyone under 12 is admitted free?

Save that mystery for the fundraising peeps; you, lucky fan, just sit back and eat your hot dog while former Chicago Bulls guard and NBA champion Ron Harper, Florida Marlins special assistant Andre Dawson, and former Montreal Expos player Warren Cromartie swing their bats. Well-loved former Marlins ballplayers and South Florida residents Andre Dawson and Jeff Conine will play ball, too, as will Bert Campaneris, Jose Cardenal, Willie Horton, John "Blue Moon" Odom, Amos Otis, Cookie Rojas, and many more. Lefty Hohlmayer and Pepper Davis, two female ballplayers who inspired the movie A League of Their Own, also plan to swing by. The game begins at 7 p.m. at Fort Lauderdale Stadium (5301 NW 12th Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Call 954-985-3454, or visit www.jdchf.org.
