A Spoon ful of Cinema

Helps the politics go down

Why doAmericans fight wars anyway? Because we want to capture baddies like Saddam and Osama? Or because Dick Cheney likes watching his stock ticker and seeing the price of Halliburton shares go up, up, and away? In his 1961 farewell address, President Eisenhower – the only five-star general to become commander-in-chief – warned that the “military-industrial complex” is a growing monster that feeds off of capitalism and conflicts. “Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry,” he warned, would be able to keep it in check. In the film Why We Fight, director Eugene Jarecki talks to people who have profited from wars (like a lady who helped develop the bunker buster), people who were hurt by conflicts (like a dad who lost a son in 9/11), and various politician and pundits. John McCain, Dan Rather, and Gore Vidal all make cameos. Check out the film tonight when it screens at the Gateway cinema (1820 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) Call 954-763-7994, or visit www.sunrisecinemas.com.
