Run, Florida, Run!

Since the 1970s, runners from South Florida have been forced to travel to freezing cold cities to qualify for the ever-popular Boston Marathon. Those days are over. Hometown runners can now stay in their own weather and run the A1A Marathon without freezing their asses off. It’s the perfect place for the thousands of runners who have already registered to get their jog on – runners from more than 40 states and 12 foreign countries. The course starts in downtown Fort Lauderdale and winds its way along more than 26 miles of ocean views in Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, and Pompano Beach.

If you aren’t up for running further than the average commute, take a crack at the 13.1-mile half-marathon. Though, if you can’t run a mile without throwing up, just hang out and watch the thousand or more sweaty folk gasp for air as they jog past. There’re live performances along the route like Billy Bones (Beach Place), the Ballyhoo Wranglers (the Elbo Room), and the White Collar Crime Band (at the entrance to the Birch State Park). It all kicks off at 6:15 a.m. when Billy Bones plays the National Anthem on his trusty saxophone. Runners start off at the 17th Street Causeway, next to the Broward County Convention Center (1950 Eisenhower Blvd. Fort Lauderdale).
