Drug smugglers go to Mexico to pick up dope. Cost-cutting business owners go there to pick up cheap labor. But for Ivan Thompson, the self-proclaimed "Cowboy Cupid," it's all about the love, baby -- not his, yours. In her documentary, Cowboy del Amor, filmmaker Michèle Ohayon follows Thompson on his mission to find Mexican brides for American men. Thought-provoking, and good-humored, the film is a behind-the-scenes peek at Thompson’s matchmaking exploits, from the time he meets a new client to the results of his efforts. Thompson provides plenty of colorful commentary as he coaches the men through the process, explaining his own history along the way. (A failed marriage led to Thompson’s distaste of gringo women, whom he says want too much.) You may laugh, but Thompson pulls in a good three-grand a pop. Now that’s amore!
