Maximum Hold!

Hairspray keeps its style – even in humidity!

So it’s 1962. John F. Kennedy is president, there’s a happy cultural zeitgeist in the air, and you just want to dance! Without messing up your blue bouffant, of course! So what if you’re a plus-sized girl in small-minded Baltimore? You can win the Corny Collins Show dance contest and be crowned as the city’s “Miss Teenage Hairspray!” But can you make Corny’s TV show racially-integrated? Can you become a role model for “big girls” everywhere? And can you also win the heart of Link Larkin, the cutest boy at the sock hop?

You can if you’re Tracy Turnblad, the teenage heroine in Hairspray. This musical is based on John Waters’ 1988 film of the same name, and Waters served as creative consultant for the stage show, ensuring that it maintained its cool, campy, quirky charm. The musical won a pile of Tony awards including best musical. Performances begin Tuesday and run through March 12 at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts (701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach). Tickets cost $29.09 to $82.09. Call 832-7469, or visit www.kravis.org.
