Actions speak louder than rock

When Billy Bragg sang, “Revolution is just a T-shirt away, ” the guys at Sub City Records surely took his words to heart. The label’s mission is to raise social awareness for progressive causes, and maybe donate a few bucks at the same time. Royalties for each Sub City release go to a charity of the artist’s choice. And since 2001, the Sub City crew has been the primary instigator of the Take Action Tour, a benefit for the National Hopeline Network, which helps kids deal with the mental health issues that often result in suicide. On a less depressing note, the Take Action Tour is also a showcase for some good, old-fashioned, sticking-it-to-the-man punk rock.

This year’s tour is headlined by Poughkeepsie, New York’s Matchbook Romance, whose moody post-hardcore caught the attention of Epitaph Records impresario Brett Gurewitz – even if the band’s cutesy name sounds familiar (My Chemical Romance, anyone?). The action takes hold Thursday at Revolution (200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). Also playing are Silverstein, Amber Pacific, Paramore, and the Early November. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; tickets cost $15. Call 954-727-0950, or visit www.jointherevolution.net.
