Fight or Flight

Beenie Man

Believe it or not, in the dancehall world, a guy can be both a self-declared "grindacologist" and a raging homophobe. Around the world, Beenie Man is equally famous for his big-bounce, hook-filled dancehall and his inflammatory comments — on and offstage — about gays. But though the Kingston-born Moses Davis has lost gigs due to his anti-chi chi man lyrics, they've also gained him a frighteningly devoted following. When Beenie's $180,000 jewel-encrusted watch was ripped off during a U.K. appearance this past February, he didn't have to lift a finger to get it back — his fans were already beating down the thief. He hits Fort Lauderdale before his skull-busting new single "Hmm Hmm" hits radio and way ahead of his new album, Undisputed, due out in July. Now's a good time to decide what side of the fence you're on with this controversial figure.

Beenie Man, along with Renegade and Richie D, plays at 11 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at Revolution, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $25. Call 954-727-0950.
