The Siblings

Pointer Sisters

Since 1973, the Pointer Sisters have been making waves in the pop world, surviving the twists and turns of stardom and longevity. Ruth, Anita, June, and Bonnie Pointer started singing gospel songs in their family home, having been warned off the devil's music (i.e., rock 'n' roll and R&B) by their pious parents. Once they left the nest, though, the group lost Bonnie to a solo career and decided to take a bite of that forbidden fruit. They burned up the R&B charts with number-one singles throughout the '70s, but it wasn't until the '80s that their signature funky, pop-savvy dance numbers would become massive crossover smashes. They did the "Neutron Dance" for Beverly Hills Cop and "Jump"ed (For Your Love) in 1984, hitting their career peak and making bucketloads of cash in the process. There hasn't been much since then, aside from the Sisters' appearance in the revival of Fats Waller's Ain't Misbehavin'in 1995. But in case it didn't sink in the first time, we'll say it again: "Neutron Dance." If you need any more convincing, you never roller-skated in the '80s.
