Don't Cry for Me

Quick, what’s the world’s eighth-largest country? Yeah, that’s right – Argentina. So why don’t you know more about it? (Don’t even try to say you can locate Tierra del Fuego, and then point to your pants.) Don’t worry, you’re not in for a lecture – just a film fest. FAU professor Luis Duno-Gottberg has sifted through the archives and put together A Retrospective of Argentinean Film.Today’s offerings at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale): at 4 p.m., Una Galllega de Habana, a 1955 comedy about a woman who goes from Spain to Cuba, with singing by the legendary Celia Cruz; at 6 p.m., La Guerra Gaucha,a 1942 flick about Argentinean cowboys fighting the occupying Spanish army; and at 8 p.m., the 1984 movie Asesinato en el Senado de la Nacion, about a senator investigating a corruption case, who then becomes a target for assassination. The festival runs through April 23, with films from the 1950s through 2001. Tickets cost $8. Call 561-297-0612, or visit www.cinemaparadiso.org.
April 12-23
