Tragedy, Redux

Sophocles’ classic play Antigone is the story of a woman who challenges a tyrannical king and is sentenced to death. All she wants is a proper burial for her late brother, an enemy of the state – but she ends up paying with her life. So when French dramatist Jean Anouilh remade the play in 1944, he drew parallels between Antigone’s struggle and that of the French resistance, which was fighting Nazi occupation. It was a tragic case of art imitating life. Antigone is performed Thursday through Sunday at the Studio One Theatre at Florida Atlantic University (777 Glades Rd., Boca Raton). Tickets cost $10 to $20. Call 800-564-9539, or visit www.fauevents.com.
