Hollywood has fallen into a formulaic rut. Movies are often predictable, following a very simple pattern: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back and a happy ending ensues -- complete with cheesy romantic score. Well, prepare to enjoy some convention-defying films because the Eighth Annual Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival has arrived. The festival started last week and runs through Sunday, culminating with the Florida premiere screening of the comedy Another Gay Movie and a closing gala thats sure to be fun and fabulous. There will be movie premieres, short films, documentaries, panel discussions, chances to meet some of the cast and crew, and, of course, plenty of partying. With nine days of gay and lesbian films from small town gay bar to Fag Hags: Women Who Love Men, theres sure to be something for everyone. Therell probably enough Brokeback Mountain jokes to turn you off cowboys forever, but if not, theres a panel discussion on Sunday at 1 p.m. called Beyond Brokeback Mountain that will look at how this seminal film altered the landscape of Hollywood and the future of gay and lesbian moviemaking. Tickets for most movies run $12 (although some screenings and discussions are free) and are available at www.mglff.com or by calling 1-866-468-7619. The movies will show in a variety of venues, so check the website for locations.
