Eastern Exposure

A half-circle of fast-stepping folk dancers, a guy playing a sopilka, and lots of sashes, boots, and baggy trousers -- goodness, it’s A Ukrainian Montage…and it’s coming this Sunday to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Joined by a cadre of vocalists and musicians, the Ukrainian Dancers of Miami enliven the Amaturo Theater stage, while Ukrainian artwork is on display in the theater lobby. Performers include Trio Maksymowich (a vocal threesome), bandura player Alla Kutsevych (that’s a plucked string instrument), and sopilka (woodwind) player Andrei Pidkivka. Also, among the mostly adult group of dancers is Mariya Klymenko, a young Ukrainian girl who came to Miami in 1999 after being severely burned by boiling water. Thankfully, South Florida’s booming plastic surgery industry has helped Klymenko get back on her feet and up on stage. There’s nothing stronger than will power… except maybe dance power. The show begins at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $15. Call 954-462-0222, or visit www.browardcenter.org.
