T.O.K.

In case you had any doubts, dancehall-pop quartet T.O.K. is the living, singing proof that boy bands are an international phenomenon. Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, longtime homies Bay-C, Alex, Craig T., and Flexx came together a couple of years ago as a doo-wop and a cappella group but quickly took on the Caribbean influences of reggaeton, soca, and dancehall. Not surprisingly, the fellas caught onto the island music trend just as it was going mainstream around the world and released their second album, Unknown Language, last year on reggae giant VP Records. Named for the Jamaican patois the boys sing in, the disc is a sweltering mix of jump-up party starters and conscious calls for peace in Kingston streets that's been both critically hailed and bombed out of rolling SUVs. The fact that the young group writes its own lyrics and music elevates it above many of its made-to-order peers. If you can't decipher the slanguage on first listen, the dancehall dictionary on the T.O.K. website (tokworld.com) is a good primer.

T.O.K. plays with Monster Twins, Black Chiney, and Prodigy Movements for the "Full a Vibes" 10th anniversary at 10 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Newcomb Hall, 200 E. 13th St., Riviera Beach. Tickets cost $25. Call 561-602-3482 or 561-236-2537.
