Matches

When Oakland band the Locals discovered they weren't the first ones to come up with their name — a Chicago band led by an Yvonne Doll already had dibs — they had no choice but to change it to something, um, less shitty. Rechristened the Matches, the punk-rock band in love with hooky choruses à la Peter Cetera decided to get even by calling their debut E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals. Of course, the fact that people actually know who they are and no one gives a fuck about the Locals should probably be satisfaction enough. Even more satisfying is anthems like "The Jack Slap Cheer" or the ridiculously infectious "The Restless," on which frontman Shawn Harris proclaims: "This is the soundtrack... of our restless lives/And though it makes no sense, these are the moments/We'll remember for the rest of our restless lives." No doubt the Matches will remember, because they sound like they're having that much fun.

The Matches play with MC Lars and Whole Wheat Bread at 9 p.m. Sunday, May 14, at Ray's Downtown, 519 Clematis St., West Palm Beach. The show costs $8. Call 561-835-1577.
