Eleven years later and Ray's Downtown is still standing.
That's good, because Cole has put together a whopper of a lineup for Sunday — Crazy Fingers, Jared Cole, the Sosos, Consider the Violet, Gardner, Katie Foley, the Immortals, Protoman, Tripwire, Life in the So-Called Space Age, and Dead to the World. So it's really been 11 years, huh? Eleven years of local music; 11 years of bringing the kids together; and 11 years of the city trying to send those kids back home.
And just what have the city's beautification efforts accomplished? This time, the Post got it right with its front-page headline a few weeks ago: "While You Were Sleeping, So Was Clematis Street." West Palm Beach is back to square one — and it's pretty damned square.
"I remember when I worked at Respectable Street in the late '80s," Carbone says. "I DJ'd there occasionally. You wouldn't want to come down here because you'd be afraid of getting mugged. Now you're afraid you're going to fall asleep."
So tell us, Mayor Frankel, just where is a person with green hair to go?
