Rhythm and Potatoes

Edwin McCain

The music biz used to be full of guys like Edwin McCain— journeyman rockers who sold just enough records to keep the suits happy while reliably filling medium-sized venues; their stars don't shine much outside the world of meat-and-potatoes rock. Much like his hometown buddies Hootie and the Blowfish, McCain — a singer/songwriter from Charleston, South Carolina — has a rootsy, earthy vibe going on. But he isn't afraid to add a noticeable R&B edge to his mainstream sound. McCain explores that edge more aggressively than ever on his new slab, Lost in America. And he pulls it off pretty well, mixing pleasantly with his trademark jangly guitars. It wouldn't be a shock if a ballad or two from this disc was all over radio by the time McCain hits South Florida.

Edwin McCain performs at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 25, at the Seminole Hard Rock's Legends Theatre, 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood. Tickets cost $25 and $35. Call 954-523-3309, or visit www.seminolehardrockhollywood.com.
