Tappin' That Thang

Tilly and the Wall

There's nothing drummers fear more than a broken arm. A stubbed toe they can deal with, but overall, damaged feet can still keep the beat. Unless, of course, you're in a band like Tilly and the Wall. There's no drum kit for these five Nebraskans, only a pair of tap-dancing shoes donned by percussionist Jamie Williams. It's a cute gimmick, but is it enough to carry the weight of the songs? Hell yeah. The band's latest album, Bottoms of Barrels, features ten of the sweetest indie-pop tunes you're likely to hear all year. And by pop, we're talking layered melodies straight out of the '60s, full of pianos, organs, omnichords, and backing vocals to rival the Polyphonic Spree (courtesy of the University of Nebraska choir). They're like the Mamas and the Papas of indie rock — with a little Fred Astaire thrown in for good measure.

Tilly and the Wall joins Dave Dondero and Tucker Tota at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 25, at Studio A, 60 NE 11th St., Miami. Tickets cost $10. Call 305-358-ROCK, or visit www.studioamiami.com.
