Crackered Up

Cracker joins the Elms

Ah, the cracked vision of Cracker: David Lowery and Johnny Hickman are two of the cracked-est crackers ever to strap on guitars and leather jackets. Their credits range from work with alt-country groundbreakers Camper Van Beethoven to all sorts of indie films. Along the way, they've made a handful of albums that have spawned a cult. Going all the way back to 1982, these guys have put out some of the best titles in rock: "Can I Take My Gun to Heaven," "Hi-Desert Biker Meth Lab," "It Ain't Gonna Suck Itself," "I Hate My Generation," "Dixie Babylon," and the immortal "Don't Fuck Me Up (With Peace and Love)." In 2003, they threw the music world a wicked forkball with an album of cracked country covers that spanned material as diverse as Terry Allen's "Truckload of Art" and Ray Wylie Hubbard's "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mothers." The irony was so subtle, it was possible to think how ironic it was that they didn't seem to be trying to be ironic. Or somethin'.

Cracker joins the Elms at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 1, at the Culture Room, 3045 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $15. Call 954-564-1074, or visit www.cultureroom.net.
