The Deep End

It's become a familiar tale nowadays: An overlooked producer emerges from behind the console to craft hit music, propelling himself to well-deserved stardom. And in the case of Artificial Intelligence, the story rings twice as true. The London-born dance-beat duo of Glenn Herweijer and Zula Warner (producers, both) has been making records for more than ten years. But lately, though, it's been dropping the drum 'n' bass scene on its ass. The duo's breakout hits "Desperado" and "Uprising" — tenacious treks into rapturous synthetics, sweet overdubs, and, of course, lightning-fast, body-shakin' beats — have garnered A.I. a heap of acclaim from die-hard DnB fans on both sides of the Atlantic. Ask those fans, and they'll gladly tell you that A.I. is reprogramming the genre.

The duo is currently touring feverishly in support of its latest mix, The Big Picture, a dream-team compilation of DnB mainstays like Roni Size, LTJ Bukem, and Utah Jazz, gelled together by A.I.'s frenetic, bottom-dropping sound. This supersized Picture may be worth a couple of thousand good words, but as far as verbiage goes, A.I. lets its beats say it all. "We prefer to let our music do the talking across the world," the band writes in its bio. Though, if A.I. keeps on spinning hits like it has been, it won't have to say a word.
