The Journey Continues

Journey

Although it's often dismissed as simply another '70s stadium band, Journey boasted an impressive pedigree that molded its early albums into articulate examples of true progressive posture. Born from the original Santana band — the same outfit that performed at Woodstock, no less — Journey went on to become one of the most successful groups of the ensuing decade, racking up a sizable number of chart-topping hits in rapid succession after acquiring the services of a strangle-voiced frontman, Steve Perry. These days, the band is indelibly etched on innumerable classic rock playlists, a constant reminder of the guilty pleasures induced by the irresistibly catchy choruses sheering the over-the-top outpour of "Wheel in the Sky," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Lovin' Touchin', Squeezin," and their ultimate schmaltz standard, "Open Arms." Perry's health problems forced him from the fold, but the core band soldiers on with singer Steve Augeri, whose ability to emote gives those cheesy chestnuts the wallop they deserve.

Journey performs with Def Leppard at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 10, at Sound Advice Amphitheatre, 601-7 Sansbury's Way, West Palm Beach. Tickets cost $29.50 to $75. Call 561-795-8883.
