It’s Pad Thai! It’s a Volcano Roll!

No, it’s Karaoke by Sushi Man!

By day he is the mild mannered Kitti Sirimaturos, but by night, he is Sushi Man, the karaoke emcee master who has been saving the world from ennui for the last six years, one karaoke hit at a time.

In his not-so-secret lair at Sushi Toi restaurant (3811 N Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale), the lights go down and the plates of sashimi are cleared. And in bursts our star! He’s a middle aged Asian man wearing – oh, yes -- an Afro wig. He hits the stage in full stride with the song that gave him his title: “Sushi Man,” his personal rendition of “Soul Man.” You want to laugh, and you do, but he’s disconcertingly good and he knows it. It’s all about the “element of surprise,” says Sushi Man. “I look oriental, but I can sing James Brown. I can do Willie Nelson to the button. People look at me and don’t think I could do that. That’s what turns people on.”

Oh, don’t worry; the Sushi Toi peeps will let you sing, too. According to Sushi Man, the restaurant has more than 10,000 (misspelled) titles to choose from -- “from oldie-goody to rock’n’roll.” The crowd is a veritable Pu Pu platter of hipsters, tourists, and the curious. “We have a unique atmosphere,” explains Sushi Man. “Everything’s cool.” It is! And if you are, you’ll hit Sushi Toi on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., or by special engagement (Call 954-564-4422).
