Everyone knows that kung fu and dance music go hand in hand. As early as 1974, disco balls were spinning to Carl Douglas' timeless classic "Kung Fu Fighting," and 30 years later, the Wu-Tang Clan is representing the Chinese delegation with its Shaolin style of hip-hop. Well, if you've had the fighting urge to get a little more pow in your party, look no further than this Saturday's Kung-Fu Hustle. This old-school rave is a heapin' helping of stir-fried Fu, served up in the spirit of Chop Socky heroes like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and the Shaw Brothers.
Event organizers Full On Productions pulled out all the stops converting the sprawling interior of Club Cinema for the party. It's a scene straight out of Hong Kong, with Chinese memorabilia, classic kung-fu films across seven screens, and kicked-up karate performances from top local dojos. That's not to mention the music: Among the 30-plus DJs shredding wax is former Rabbit in the Moon cofounder and producer DJ Monk. Also taking center stage is the breakbeat duo Emilyplay and Devine a soulful blend of live electronics and sultry female vocals. The crowd should be in full effect as well, as admission is reduced for anyone who comes dressed as his or her favorite kung-fu hero and yes, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar counts. So come practice your chops or bust out a kung-fu shuffle it's all good at the Hustle.
Get your hustle on at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Club Cinema, 3251 N. Federal Hwy., Pompano Beach. Admission costs $15 to $20 for those 18 and up. Call 954-687-7131.
