The Smashup plays the type of post-hardcore that all the kids seem to be eating up nowadays. And that's fine. The Brooklyn-based band makes a nice racket, and it has the decency to back it up with lyrics about real issues (addiction, abortion, etc) instead of sappy love songs. Before the Smashup embarks on its upcoming tour with Megadeth, the band drops by to headline this Friday's Contempt Records Label Launch Party. The local label's first act, Telefiction, also joins in the party, as do Fantastic Amazing, Goodnight Moon, Not Yet Rated, Dooms de Pop, and others. Pro skaters and local artists will be doing their thing too, lending a real carnival feel to the operation. Maybe Contempt's adviser/spiritual leader Lancelot Hall (of the band Inner Circle) will be seen thrashing around the pit. Who knows? Weirder things have happened.
The Contempt Records party featuring the Smashup takes place at 6 p.m. Friday, August 18, at Revolution, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Admission costs $10 to $15. Call 954-727-0950, or visit www.contemptrecords.com.
