The Deep End

Break This

Outbreak 2006 promises to be a two-day spread bridging styles and egos between South Beach and downtown Fort Lauderdale without the requisite infected monkey. No. Instead of panic, the atmosphere will be controlled by rawness: b-boy and b-girl battling, cyphering, DJs, and live-action graffiti by Young N Careless. The Revolution leg starts at 1 p.m. and goes to 11, with musical entertainment dished by DJ Magic and Fusik's hip-hop/Latin lounge funk. Gookie's spoken word will smite the uncultured throughout the day, flanking a myriad of competitions judged by the esteemed reps of Luieville and Beta Rawkz from the Street Masters Crew and Spee-D from the Unique Styles Crew. Everyone will be under the eye of scrutiny: styles, attitudes, and rawness will be rewarded. The gravy here, though, is the $1,000 award and two plane tickets to Europe for the two-on-two, b-boy/b-girl battles. That should be incentive enough to get some good action from those involved — although it's a good idea to check the rules for routines.

Get your fly gear on, leave the cardboard at home, and hydrate yourselves properly, because if it seems like this kitty ain't sweet enough for you, an added bonus to an already hectic and varied day will be the inclusion (with the event's paid cover) of a nice afterparty featuring the turntable stylings of local DJ Craze, DJ Magic Mike, and that smooth lizard of Internet promoting, Z-Trip. Could there be a better way to end the summer? Well, maybe if you throw a little krumping action in the mix.

Day Two of Outbreak 2006 takes place Saturday, August 26, at Revolution, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. The all-ages show starts at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $15. Call 954-727-0950, or visit www.jointherevolution.net.
