There are some genres that should never have mixed. Take rap and metal. Please. How did that ever get so popular? Just think: If the equation had been slightly altered at its onset say, with smooth, acoustic rhythms and soulful singing instead of half-assed metal riffs and tuneless barking we'd have fewer Limp Bizkits and more bands like G. Love & Special Sauce. Take a little John Hammond and Bob Dylan and give it the backbeat and lyrical flow of A Tribe Called Quest and you've got a pretty good idea of what this Philly-based group sounds like. Call it hip-hop blues. G. Love would be a perfect collabo partner for the likes of Ben Harper and Blackalicious. Oh, wait they already did that.
G. Love & Special Sauce perform Saturday, September 2, at the Culture Room, 3045 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $29.99. Doors open at 8 p.m. Call 954-564-1074, or visit www.cultureroom.net.
