The Deep End

Check the Mic

The hardest part about being an aspiring musician — aside from finding a garage to practice in — may be getting your start. Self-made local producer DJ Scoobz knows that as well as anyone. He's spun his way into heavy rotation at a handful of clubs and started his own production company, Phatt Traxx. Now Scoobz is taking a page from the Miami hip-hop scene and starting his own forum for would-be MCs to take shape — a new open-mic night dubbed Mic Check Mondays. Undiscovered local rappers, singers, DJs, and artists are invited to do their best to impress the gathering of promoters and music industry alum that will hold court. Think of it as Rap Star: Supernova, minus the jeering judges. And Scoobz thinks Fort Lauderdale is brimming with would-be stars who just can't get their foot in the door.

"Artists ask, 'How can I get more exposure — where are the clubs where I can perform?'" Scoobz says. "Here they have a chance to be heard by industry people they wouldn't normally meet."

All any performer, producer, or record mogul needs to do is sign up at the door. Whether it's hip-hop, reggae, R&B, or reggaeton, all performers get five minutes to do their thing. So, as Scoobz notes in his e-vite, "Make sure your shit is tight before you hit that stage." After the performances, the whole gang is invited to celebrate rap-star style — because even if you're not a hip-hop VIP yet, you can still party like one.

Mic Check Mondays begin at 9 p.m. every Monday at Banana Boat, 6242 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Sunrise. Admission costs $5. Call 954-296-8851.
