Tomb It May Concern

What hath goth wrought? More to the point, who wrought goth rock? Make no mistake: The genre sprang from both sides of the Atlantic. But on our own side, 45 Grave undertook the intermingling horror and punk of Berry, Bowie, and Bela Lugosi. Rewind to early 1980s, Los Angeles. Don Bolles and Rob Ritter (AKA Rob Graves), drummer and bassist for L.A. punk legends the Germs and Gun Club, respectively, colluded with guitarist Paul Cutler and singer Dinah Cancer (AKA Mary Simms), and 45 Grave emerged. Joining the stripped-down blitz of punk, the gleeful gloom-rock of Alice Cooper (whose "School's Out" 45G covered), the big booming-chord age of metal, and Morticia Adams' fashion sense, 45 Grave laid groundwork for many bands in its wake. As diverse deviations of undead, they're back (minus Ritter, departing this earthly veil in '91), the lineup including Cancer and members of Frankenstein, Naked Aggression, and Marilyn Manson.
