Brothers, Friends... What's the Difference?

Gregg Allman & Friends

As lead singer and keyboard player of Southern rock greats the Allman Brothers, Gregg Allman is in fact the only band member left to bear the family name. After a 1971 motorcycle accident killed brother Duane (35 years ago this week), Gregg has been the group's main man. And though his brand of Southern rock is virtually nonexistent outside its own stately enclaves, Gregg and the other "Brothers" still pack up the truck and regularly tour the country. Gregg Allman & Friends is an extension of that touring — but with a wider range of musicians, like drummer Floyd Miles, who has worked with everyone from James Brown to Sam & Dave and Afro-Cuban jazzmaster Jay Collins. Sure, you can expect some classic Allman cuts from the seven-member group. But the band is also known to sprout out some choice covers and improve riffs that may leave the tie-dyed masses in a knot.

Gregg Allman & Friends perform at 8 p.m. Friday, October 27, at Pompano Beach Amphitheatre, 1806 NE Sixth St., Pompano Beach. Tickets cost $38 to $45. Call 954-946-2402.
