Joni's Promise. Don't let subtitles turn you off: you don't have to be a film buff to enjoy Joni's Promise. The Indonesian flick hardly feels foreign, despite the language difference. With a rockin' soundtrack (and many songs in English), the movie delivers a fast-paced romantic comedy (though it's billed as a drama) as its hero, a conscientious working man, races through the streets of Jakarta to make his delivery of film reels to the next movie house on time. The leading man is so charmingly good-looking, and his character such an earnest do-gooder, that it's impossible not to root for him as he faces inconceivable obstacles to his goal. An adorable love-interest motivates him as much as his work ethic to get him to his destination on time. Here's a film for those who appreciate the technical side of film production and know their cinematic history; there are many subtle allusions to art films. It makes sense when you learn that Joko Anwar, who makes his writing and directing debut here, is a former film critic. For the recreational moviegoer, Joni's Promise is full of humorous references to Hollywood blockbusters and has an ending that Hollywood would bless. With strong acting, excellent direction, and a smart script, the movie succeeds in delivering an entertaining bit of cinema that will make you feel good about what you do, as long as you're doing what you love. Or perhaps it will inspire a lifestyle change. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 9:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 1:30 and 5:30 p.m. Las Olas 15 at Riverfront. (85 minutes)
