The roots-rock arena has become a crowded venue of late, proving it takes ample distinction to outpace the competition. Until now, Chris Knight's chief claim to fame may have been the fact that his sophomore album, A Pretty Good Guy, was released on September 11, 2001 — certainly a dubious hook on which to hang a career. Fortunately, Knight's got the grit and the wherewithal he needs to distance himself from that particular postmark. His latest effort, Enough Rope, is a perfect case in point. It's a stirring set of rugged, weathered melodies inspired by heartbreak and the heartland. Like Steve Earle and John Prine (two artists Knight's frequently compared to), Knight makes music that's unflinching in its honesty yet tender in its snapshots of human frailty and misguided intentions. And if his songs sometimes appear tangled and scarred, they're also underscored by a resilience and determination that make for true Americana anthems.
