While most of us remember Russell Simmons' HBO series Def Comedy Jam as the launching pad for dozens of black comedians, it's easy to forget that it was also the show that launched the DJ as a pop icon. Every week, notorious scratch master Kid Caprirevved the audience to a fevered pitch before belting out in his classic baritone "Def Comedy Jam!" Through his residency at HBO, Capri injected brutal street dialect and ghetto showmanship into the burgeoning genre of turntablism. After that, kids everywhere wanted to feel just what it was like to be a superstar DJ.

OK, so Capri's a bit of a legend. But what's he done for us lately? Well, he's releasing tracks on his own label, No Kid'N (very clever), that blend old-school soul with new-school style. He's been tapped again to be the master of ceremonies for the newly revived Def Comedy Jam, back on HBO after a ten-year hiatus. And he's performing at Stage 3, the block-party style event Saturday at Revolution, spinning the kind of soulful New York City hip-hop that South Florida could use more of each week. A meager 45 bucks not only gets you in the door to see one of the best DJ sets around but unlimited drinks and free grub from local Caribbean restaurants as well. High rollers can plop down 60 bucks for VIP access (read: top-shelf liquor).
