You can reinvent the wheel, and you can reinvent the reinvention. The Hep Cat Boo Daddies, a rough, tough South Florida power trio, manages to do a little of both, drawing on a diverse amalgam of blues, rock, surf, funk, and rockabilly to fuel their highly charged musical motif. While their onstage antics and flair for showmanship often recalls other rock 'n' roll revivalists the Stray Cats or even Sha Na Na the band's own penchant for flash and frenzy has earned a devoted following among the masses and the media. (The latter lavished the Boo Daddies with enough superlatives to propel them to the prestigious International Blues Challenge in Memphis.) The "Boo Dads," as they're often referred to, are currently celebrating the release of a new album, Hotrodsexgod, proof positive that while it's one thing to reinvent the wheel, it's quite another to keep it on a (rock 'n') roll.
The Hep Cat Boo Daddies hold a CD-release party at 9 p.m. Saturday, December 9, at the Hollywood Playhouse, 2640 Washington St., Hollywood. Also performing are the Freakin Hott and the improv comedy troupe THEY. Tickets cost $10 to $15. Call 954-922-3040.
