Trad Troubadours

Banyan Street Jug Band

Given their eclectic mix of Mississippi Delta blues, jazz, country blues, roots, and ragtime, the Banyan Street Jug Band might be as informative to scholarly types as it is entertaining. Indeed, its performances suggest the aural equivalent of being whisked back to an earlier era, to places where itinerant musicians gathered and entertained in return for a coin dropped in a guitar case. After all, where else can you find an instrumental lineup that features such down-home accouterments as a washboard washtub bass, spoons, and jug alongside fiddle, mandolin, and acoustic guitar? (Useless factoid: There are only 534 musicians registered with Washboard International worldwide, and the Banyans can claim one of them.) That's not to say the Jug Band doesn't occasionally delve into contemporary covers and its own original repertoire — or that its serious intent isn't tempered with a sly sense of humor. Regardless of the subject matter, it's a traditional template that distinguishes the band as being of a vintage variety.

The Banyan Street Jug Band performs at 9 p.m. Wednesday, December 27, at the Bamboo Room, 25 S. J St., Lake Worth. Admission is free. Call 561-585-2583, or visit www.bambooroomblues.com.
