Enter the Haggis

OK, we weren't sure what a "haggis" was exactly until we were told it has something to do with a Scottish delicacy consisting of boiled sheep innards. Which, for the most part, is pretty fucking disgusting. On the other hand, considering the delectable music made by Toronto's Enter the Haggis, it might be anything but. The group has a sound that could aptly be tagged "romp 'n' roll," with its frenzied use of fiddles, bagpipes, and whistles. Stirring and irrepressible, the group offers a populist take on Celtic tradition, with ample influences of rock, folk, and world music tossed in for good measure. Non-"Haggis Heads" (a rather questionable tag for a group of musical devotees if ever there was one) are advised to check out the band's latest, Soapbox Heroes, its most riveting set yet and one that finds politics and pathos injected into the usual barroom revelry. Ample reason to raise a glass and hail the Haggis.

Enter the Haggis performs at 9 p.m. Thursday, January 18, at the Bamboo Room, 25 S. J St., Lake Worth. Tickets cost $15. Call 561-585-2583.
