The Deep End

Stoned Love

It's the seven-year mark for Naked Evolution, downtown Fort Lauderdale's wildest revolving dancehall reggae party, and to celebrate the milestone, promoters are bringing in South Florida's marquee "sound system." That's Jamaican talk for a roaming reggae party of epic proportions, and supplying the sounds will be the Miami-based Black Chiney. About that name, by the way: All of Black Chiney's members are Afro-Chinese Jamaicans, so don't get your hackles up. But they're serious when it comes to playing reggae, and the show should be well worth your jack. But be prepared for a late night. They don't usually touch the decks until 2 or 3 a.m., so take a disco nap before heading out to this gig. And here's the bonus: As hot as Black Chiney is right now, it's not even the main reason to show up. Jamaica's legendary sound system Stone Love is flying in to headline this gig. In the dancehall world, Killamanjaro, King Jammy, and King Tubby may be more famous, but Stone Love is in its 35th year in the business and deserves the longevity award if nothing else. We're not sure which selectors from Stone Love will appear at this event, but among DJs Billy Slaughter, Jet Lee, Wee-Pow, Bill Cosby, G-Fuss, Rory, and Nico, does it really matter?

Stone Love, Black Chiney, D-Nice, and DJ Dorenzo perform Saturday, February 10, at Revolution, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Doors open at 10 p.m. Visit www.whata-gwan.com.
