Hep Cat Boo Daddies

Let's be honest. Aren't you sick and tired of all those weepy, candy-ass singer/songwriter types who are so annoyingly abundant lately? Do you really need some wussy crooner reminding you just how bad life sucks? Maybe you ought to check out a concert featuring the Hep Cat Boo Daddies, a hard-rocking South Florida trio specializing in swagger, showmanship, and a revved-up collision of punk, surf, and red-hot blues. Mining a style similar to that of near-namesakes the Stray Cats or Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, they up the ante when it comes to amplitude and attitude. Repeatedly cited as South Florida's best local blues band, they were also chosen to represent our area at the 2005 International Blues Competition in Memphis. Two CDs and a recently released DVD attest to their abilities, but it's their live gigs — where they're often paired with such heavyweights as Leon Russell, the North Mississippi Allstars, B.B. King, Jimmie Vaughan, and Edgar Winter — that reveal their true prowess. Bottom line is, these Boo Daddies are some badass mothers.

Hep Cat Boo Daddies open for Johnny Winter at 9 p.m. Friday, February 23, at Musicians Exchange Hollywood Playhouse, 2640 Washington St., Hollywood. Tickets cost $25 and $30. Call 954-922-0404.
