Forget About Scarsdale

There is something special that occurs in the universe when Walter Becker and Donald Fagan of Steely Dan get together; perhaps it is akin to a musical meeting of cesium and water, resulting in a strong reaction of melody and lyrics with a few shouts from the amen corner. The bards from Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, spent their college days jamming with a young Chevy Chase and the rest of their time diligently crafting songs that the world could fall in love with. The Dan, as the duo are sometimes affectionately known, have put out album after album of smooth, pop-inflected complexity from 1972's Can't Buy a Thrillto the latest, 2003's Everything Must Go,with a few solo pit stops and the requisite sampling from urban America. Yes, they actually didcollaborate with Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz, but we can overlook that. Currently, they're back on the road with the Heavy Rollers Tour, so grab a cooler of Black Cow, some Cuervo Gold, and a few sticks of fine Colombian, and enjoy some of the best-played, best-written songs of the past quarter century.

The Dan abides.
