People who nostalgically pine for a time before events like the civil rights and women’s movements have some explaining to do. Sure, the 1950’s had a couple of things going for them, like the drive-in restaurant, the milkman, greasers, and a booming industry for girl groups -- but all that aside, the era reeks of vanilla, no? But if it’s the girl groups you miss, the new play The Taffetas at the Broward Stage Door (1444 NE 26th St., Wilton Manors) should address your hankerings. In honor of groups like The Chordettes and the McGuire Sisters, The Taffetas tells the story of Kaye, Peggy, Cheryl, and Donna – four singing sisters from Muncie, Indiana, who are about to make their television debut on, Spotlight on Music.
Working through numbers like “Tonight You Belong to Me,” and “Mr. Sandman,” The Taffetas provides just the right amount of schmaltz to hit the nostalgia spot. Offered on and off Broadway since its inception, the production includes a fake applause sign and a collage of ice cream sodas.
