18 Postcards from Paris

A handful of cities could’ve inspired the 18 charming short films from Paris, Je T’aime, but only one pulled it off: the infectiously spellbinding City of Lights. Like sampling nougat from a box of truffles, 21 famed directors dish out rich kaleidoscopic slices of urban humdrum in petite vignettes, each one clocking in at roughly seven minutes. Joel and Ethan Coen craft a yarn about an American tourist (a skeleton-cheeked Steve Buscemi) locked in a tussle with a pugnacious local. Alfonso Cuaron does his one-looooong-take-does-the-trick shtick, while Wes Craven ditches the old scare-a-minute chestnut and settles on a honeymooning couple copping some relationship advice from the spirit of Oscar Wilde (who expected anything but ghouls and ghosties from this dude anyway?). Best in show belongs to piece in which a fatally-wounded immigrant serenades a rattled female paramedic with songs of his homeland just before he passes. Catch Paris, Je T’aime at 5:30 p.m. this Wednesday at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets run $5 to $8. Call 954-525-3456, or visit www.fliff.com.
