Spice up your art life

If the United States is indeed the world's melting pot, then South Florida is the nation's comal (which, for all you gringos, is a tortilla skillet). Yes, when it comes to Latin American culture, SoFla’s got it all, and you don't have to have a passport or plane ticket to enjoy it.

A big part of that culture is its proud and colorful artistic traditions. They go all the way back to Mesoamerican peeps like the Mayans and Aztecs, and still live among us here today. Check out the current exhibit from Miami's Museum of the Americas, “Contemporary Latin American Art X.” It features the works of artists who are known internationally but still have local ties, like Gardani and Pilar Tobon. Also on the night’s agenda is an opening night lecture by Raul Oyuela, Director of the Museum of the Americas, followed by a reception – all of which is free.

“Contemporary Latin American Art X” runs through October 19th at the Broward Community College South Campus Art Gallery (7200 Hollywood Blvd., Pembroke Pines). Call 305-599-8088, or visit www.museumamericas.org.
